“Ecotones”
This series came together in the midst of listening to a conversation between Bjork and mother, scientist, professor, storyteller Robin Wall Kimmer. In it Kimmer brings up the ecological concept of ecotones. She stated that ecotones are “places where two ecosystems meet; the edges where unique ecologies thrive”. This idea of two thriving spaces coming together to create something unique became my north star. Photography seemed to be the ideal medium to crystallize the energy encapsulated in the moments where the idea of ecotones rang. Those ones around us always; where those edges meet become greater than the sum of their parts.
Over the past years’ I’ve found myself revisiting one of my earliest loves, MotherNature. This journey placed me in constant awe of both the grandeur and minutia of her beauty. While also recognizing the lines drawn by our species' commitment to separate ourselves from said beauty.
My camera and a hand held light acted as lead investigators, while seeking out these waves of wonder and detachment. On this journey I found myself looking at our world through the eyes of some of our more-than-human partners on this planet.
What resulted from this spark was a visual homage to biomimicry, diptychs echoing the phenomenon of ecotones. Each moment fixed in time planted alongside another to create something of a unique retinal ecosystem. In each, the viewer can recognize new perspectives, stories and senses within those connections that can grow with a collective effervescence. These unified images were made with the goal of creating a space for one to look at their world in a new light and examine where they find themselves in their relationship to the thin and thick spaces within it.
