“Does Art Make U Smart” is series of mixed media works Colan began constructing in the Spring of 2022.
In this on-going series he explores the idea of the iPhone as a readymade studio; leveraging a tool that manipulates the way each of us see the world around us as a means of intentional abstraction. The name “Does Art Make U Smart” is derived from the fact that that very phrase is the alias his own iPhone has taken on since 2015, a name that allowed him to airdrop pieces made in the moment to any open and accepting phones around him.
The “Does Art Make You Smart” film is an abstract ballet; created entirely within the confines of his “readymade studio”. The piece is comprised of Colan’s drawings he animated dancing upon backgrounds of his paintings, digital work, moments of movement and sound captures, with his poetry and songs he wrote sprinkled throughout it.
All together the work is a fever dream of sorts, one that takes the viewer on a journey through Colan’s imagination and ultimately aims at empowering the viewer to express themselves in whatever way comes natural to them in the moment.
